Our office participates in several Clinical Trials throughout the year.  These are the current trials as of October 28, 2005:

Trials for Metastatic Breast Cancer (stage 4)

1.      A trial comparing a new taxane (same family of drugs as Taxotere and Taxol) with Xeloda. These are two different chemotherapy drugs. For patients whose breast cancer has progressed.

2.           A trial comparing a new oral medication (pill) called Lapatinib given with Femara to Femara alone. For patients newly diagnosed with metastatic disease and therefore who have not received prior treatment for metastatic cancer.

3.   A trial using a new hormonal medication, similar to Tamoxifen. For patients whose breast cancer is progressing.

4.      A trial comparing an oral medication (pill) given with Femara to Femara alone. For patients newly diagnosed with metastatic disease and therefore who have not received prior treatment for metastatic cancer. Similar to study #2 but this is a different drug that acts on a different cellular pathway.

5.     A trial comparing a new oral medication (pill) called Lapatinib (same as #2) given with Xeloda to Xeloda alone.  For patients who have received some treatment for breast cancer in the metastatic setting but progressed.

Trials for the Adjuvant setting (after surgery)

1.     A trial for pre-menopausal women receiving chemotherapy.  This trial will compare actonel (a medication (oral) to prevent and/or treat bone los to placebo.)  Bone density will be monitored.

Observational Study 

  1. A study of patients with stage 4, HER2 positive breast cancer. There is no study treatment involved; you will receive any treatment your doctor sees fit. The study only involves data collection to be used for further analysis.

Clinical Trials on the Horizon 

  1. A trial comparing two hormonal agents in post-menopausal women with hormone receptor positive breast cancer.

    2.      A trial to determine the efficacy of an existing osteoporosis medication in preventing bone loss in women taking hormonal agents for breast cancer.

    3.  A trial using an herbal compound (Ginseng) to determine its efficacy in improving cancer and cancer treatment related fatigue.
